Adjumani-Patients in Adjumani hospital have for the last three days been cleaning the hospital after the causal workers laid down their tools due to non-payment.
Adjumani hospital that has won National accolades for being among the cleanest hospitals in Uganda has been deserted by cleaners. This has forced patients to start cleaning and avoid contracting disease.
The medical facility had started producing horrible unpleasant smell, as the 25 cleaners have vowed not to report on duty until their arrears are paid fully.
The most affected parts are the maternity ward and the outpatient department which are visibly filthy while in other wards some nurses this morning volunteered with care givers to have the places cleaned.
The chairman hospital management committee, Jack Bola, said that the service provider has withdrawn the cleaners due to nonpayment of their earnings because the contractor Corim Enterprises has not been paid for months.
He promised to organize a crisis meeting with the district health officer Dr.Bhoka Gorge and find urgent solution to the long running impasse.
The managing director of Corim Enterprises Mangapi Lawrence said the office of the district health officer has been frustrating his company and consistently with utmost defiance refused to pay arrears dating back to July 2017.
The dilemma according to Mangapi Lawrence was in the offing because the service provider Corim Enterprises has been on piece meal contract extension making planning very difficult as opposed to the usual contracts based on financial years.
The secretary health, Sabuni John accused the district health officer of frustrating voters and other technical officer by working in isolation and warned of harsh consequences if the situation is not reversed in three days.
When our reporter visited the office of the DHO, Dr Bhoka George was reported for a family meeting in Itula sub county, Obongi County in Moyo district.
Adjumani hospital has 100 beds; four wards an outpatient department with several clinics, the facility has a catchment area of over five hundred thousand people.
