Arua- Over $ 12-million has been allocated for construction of a modern stadium at Arua Hill primary school grounds.
The district does not have a modern sports facility that can also host national events and the district has been relying on the dilapidated Dorcus Inzikuru stadium that lacks sanitary facilities and pavilion.
Speaking to West Nile Press Online, the Mayor Arua Municipality, Hajji Issa Kato, said while Barifa, now Inzikuru stadium awaits resources from the central government, the Municipality has already signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an Indian based construction to develop Arua hill grounds into a three-star stadium.
The project which is at the final stage of endorsement by the council will be undertaken by Juada consultants and Tiruparti construction from India through Public Private Partnership arrangement.
According to Kato, the consultants, who are originally from Arua but fled to India during the 1979 war against former President Iddi Amin, are getting back to develop the stadium.
“These are major developments we are undertaking. You will see a wonderful stadium like this,” he said.
The Municipal Planner, Mr Moses Findru, says all processes legal and technical processes have been completed, adding that it is one of the investments aimed at addressing unemployment challenges of the youth.
Similarly, the President Arua Municipal Development Forum Naseem Hilal welcomes the multi-million project saying it will not only fast track the Arua city status but also enhance the usability and revenue collection for the Municipality and offer employment to the youth through construction and maintenance of the facility.
Over the years, Arua hill boma grounds has the main host for all major public and private events because of its central location and better sanitary facilities but once facelifted, its will increase the cost of its usage.
