High Court has halted the long awaited Elections of Local Council One Chairpersons.
The elections have numerously been cancelled where the opposition and the civil society organisations questioned its legality and credibility of holding the elections.
The Deputy Registrar at High Court, sitting in Jinja, Jesse Byarunaga in the presence of counsel Esther Adikin, passed an interim order of 60 days.
“An Interim order of injunction is hereby issued against the respondent (Electoral Commission), he agents and servants restraining them from conducting the LC elections scheduled this November until the main application is heard and determined,”
The Lc 1 Aspirant of Old Bus Park Cell, in Arua, Reuben Anziku (Independent), said: “I was also not well impressed by the criteria of voting by lining up and head counting. If the court found that it was not proper, then I support it. People should be allowed to go by secret voting in order to avoid hatred in community. But I had already wasted time and money during my consultations and I do not know how the government will handle this.”
The petition was filed by Alibawani Allan. The Aspirants in the elections were already conducting consultations and secret campaigns in the villages.
