Maracha. At least 42000 children below the age of five in Maracha district have been immunized in the recent polio campaign.
Sunday Cadribo the acting district health officer said the district registered 116.2 percent achievement of targets in this exercise.
“As a district, we received 48000 vaccines and shs.74.2 m for the polio immunization campaign. This timely facilitation by Health Ministry led to success of the programme. The campaign also helped us to identify other common health challenges in the communities,” Cadribo said.
The polio immunization has been low especially where some mothers forget to follow the dates. This has put lives of the children at risk of contracting polio. The district health officer commends all the stake holders who took part in the exercise for the active roles they played for the success.
The three day programme was carried out in 73 selected districts of Uganda. The districts selected in this campaign include those with confirmed polio cases, districts located along international borders and the ones in cosmopolitan regions with huge influx of people.
Uganda is on the verge to be certified polio free by World Health Organization (WHO). Uganda has been in polio campaign drive over the years especially in the areas that are prone to contracting it at the border districts.
West Nile is a polio prone diseases especially as most of the districts borders South Sudan and DRCongo where health care system have collapsed and uncontrolled movement of people at the border points to and from Uganda.
