West Nile-The bordering districts of West Nile have been put on alert as Ebola has killed 17 people in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Dr Alex Adaku the acting Director Arua regional referral hospital says because of the threat, infection prevention committee and emergency response team has been put in place to handle any emerging cases.
A bigger population of DRC regularly frequents the district to access medical services from Arua regional referral hospital and this presents a serious threat of out breaks of hemorrhagic fever.
“Certainly we are worried because a case of Ebola is not simple to manage and we need to intensify community surveillance and we are already on continuous professional education so that the staff are aware of such emerging threats,” Dr Adaku.
He added that more community awareness campaign is being undertaken to educate the masses about the Ebola.
Dr Adaku says the hospital has also heightened surveillance in Out Patient Departments at entry points within the district and the clinicians and laboratory technicians are aware.
Dr Patrick Anguzu the DHO Arua said that sensitization of the public is ongoing and isolation ward has been created at Oli Health Center Four in Arua Municipality to handle such cases.
“Surveillance is being done, health workers already trained to be alert but the challenge is we need border point checks and health personnel deployed there, which is now being hindered by inadequate resources,” Dr Anguzu added.
Dr Anguzu appeals to the public to be aware of hemorrhagic fevers and be at heightened levels with the people especially from DRC and report any case of such nature to responsible authorities.
