The resilient Opposition leader in Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai , 65, has died.
He died after suffering for long from illness. Tsvangirai was a fighter for democracy during the despotic regime of former President Robert Mugabe. Tsvangirai during his political struggles did not relent or give up fighting for democracy for the people of Zimbabwe.
He died of colon cancer. “He died this evening. The family communicated this to me,” MDC vice president Elias Mudzuri told Reuters.
He was undergoing treatment in South Africa. During the struggles, Tsvangirai was subjected to brutality at the hands of the military as he was accused of treason of trying to topple the regime of Mugabe.
He was once served as Prime Minister following an agreement after the elections. He encouraged mass action to fight Mugabe’s regime that had collapsed economy where the Zimbabwe’s currency lost against the dollar.
In 1999, Tsvangirai founded the Movement for Democratic Change.
