Nebbi- A report released by Twaweza shows how Ugandans do not trust or are skeptical of information provided to them by politicians across the country especially those from the ruling National Resistance Movement NRM party.
The report shows a combined 30 per cent of the electorates who do not have trust in information provided by either the president or a Member of Parliament from the ruling NRM party, showing grim support for the ruling party.
The findings are contained in a baseline survey, “Ugandans’ opinions on trust of politicians.”
It is based on data from Sauti za wanainchi, where 1980 respondents participated to reach the above figures.
Mr Chris Agwokotho Odubi, a Nebbi based journalist says the findings are not surprising, but reflects the true image of politics in the country.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all. Not once or twice or even thrice when I heard people complaining that politicians are not trust worthy in all they do. A number of people say politics is a dirty game and I think at some point what makes it dirty apart from the character assassination is the failure by politicians to fulfill some of their pledges they make especially to the local populace.”
Ms Jennifer Apenjonga, a resident of Unjuku Upper cell Thatha division Nebbi municipality says she has lost trust in politicians because most of them come with empty promises.
Ms Apenjonga, a mother of four and a registered voter in the area says she regrets voting in the previous elections because none of her expectations according to promises made by the area Member of Parliament was met.
“I feel like I should not vote anymore in my life, these people are just liars who come and deceive us with promises that are not even achievable”, she said this morning.

In August this year while campaigning as the NRM party candidate, the Municipality MP, Mr Hashim Sulaiman at Nebbi primary school playground, President Yoweri Museveni’s decade long pledge of tarmacking of the Nebbi-Goli road to Zombo district met stiff resistance from the locals in Nebbi after they questioned how the president could keep bringing back the same message for the whole ten years without any progress.
Another resident, Mr Otto John, a resident of Pawong parish Nebbi Sub County Nebbi district says he is alarmed by the long-awaited upgrade of the Nebbi-Goli road to bitumen following the president’s pledge since 2006, which has not materialized to date.
He says there should be no elections if leaders cannot walk the talk on the promises they make to electorates.
“I am personally very tired of the constant lies being said by the president in regards to this road. Every campaign he comes with new strategies to deceive us so we can give him votes. I already have a very bitter taste for all NRM politicians because their god father is untrustworthy.”
Responding to the above report this morning, Mr Geoffrey Thorwinyo-wa the Nebbi municipality LC5 Councilor says a community cannot exist without leaders.
The Independent politician says issues such as failure to fulfill pledges and others are just deviations from what a leader is supposed to do.
