- Recently, Royal Pharmacy lost about 400 million and the shop owner lost Shs 15 million during fire outbreak
- Some of the traders who have lost their goods in fire are now financially crippled as some of them are not insured
West Nile- The police force has only one firefighting truck that cannot be able to manage the nine districts across the sub-region.
This follows the breakdown of one of the trucks three years ago. It has since been taken to Kampala for repair leaving only one. The Chairman Chamber of Commerce, Jackson Atima, said as a result of having one truck, businessmen have lost their property in fire outbreaks.
“Recently, we had fire outbreaks in Royal Pharmacy and a shop in Nsambia cell. It was difficult to respond to this incident because some of the officers told us that the truck had mechanical problems. The response of police should be fast enough even if it is only one truck so that such scenarios do not re-occur.”
Regional Head of Fire Brigade, Michael Munguacel, said: “We are still waiting for the second truck to be repaired and this has taken long and this has made response slow.”
He said the single truck is not able to make emergency response because of the vast Sub-region. He said people normally use other methods of putting out fire when it breaks.
The danger has always been during the dry seasons where fire incidences are prone. And two years ago, when the mechanical engineers from police department came, they promised to repair the broken truck and return it. But this has not been done since then.
