Moyo-Elephants have invaded homes and farms in Dufile Sub-county in Moyo district.
They consequently destroyed a grass thatched house of one of the locals, cassava, sweet potatoes and cotton farms.
The three villages affected included Itialo, Oruba and Opi village in Chinyi Parish Dufile, Moyo district.
Nemesio Idro, an Elderly farmer whose Cassava gardens were destroyed by the elephants said the people are disappointed with this continued damages.
“My field of cassava and cotton were destroyed on Monday. This time they (Elephants) swept the cassava gardens and we are real disappointed for what is happening in this Sub-county,” he said.
The locals have been prone to elephant attacks every year. There are no proper control measures from the near-by park and the locals as the elephants roam freely in their areas.
The LCIII Chairperson of Dufile Maurice Nyidanyi, said the inadequate manpower of the game rangers was increasing the problem of elephant attacks. “There are only two officers working in this area and then how can they make effective movement control of the animals? It is very difficult,” Nyidanyi said.
Joseph Angwe, the Sub County Agricultural officer Dufile said that the elephants prefer sweet potatoes, Cassava and Mangoes because it has sweet smell at greater distances.
“These are crops elephants destroyed of the crops yet these crops can easily fight food insecurity. We advise farmers to plant cassava, potatoes and many others crops so the elephants cause food insecurity when crops of such nature are massively destroyed at early stage before harvest,” Angwe said.
The LCV chairman Moyo district Williams Anyama, said the problem of elephants has been persisting because the root cause has not been addressed.
Anyama said his office has consulted district executive committee and plans are underway to organize bigger conference and it will take place in Dufile Sub County. “This Conference will particularly on the issue of Wildlife and their effect but the effect is crosscutting basing on agriculture, prosperity of people and achieving middle income status as set up by the government”, he said.
