Yumbe- The ongoing renovation and expansion works at Yumbe Hospital has greatly excited the locals in Yumbe district.
Many of the residents are hopeful that health services in Yumbe district will improve once construction works in the facility are completed.
Mrs Gloria Adiru a resident of Bila Village, Driwala Parish, Lodonga sub county said: “We used to seek specialised services in other hospitals like Arua. Sometimes if a patient required blood transfusion and there was stock out here, the health workers would refer the person. But with the challenges of transport, some of those patients die along the way to the referral hospital. I think when this hospital is reconstructed, it will save many lives.”
Majid Issah Anguko a resident of Kuru Trading Centre in Yumbe district said: “This hospital was initially constructed to admit only 100 inpatients. But with the increased population, it became difficult for our people to get quality services. Drugs even became very inadequate. I am sure with this reconstruction; in near future we are going to have good services here. We used to go to Arua and Lacor but after reconstruction works are completed, we shall not go somewhere else. We shall receive our (health) services here.”
Eng Joel Aita the Chief Executive Officer Joadah Consult, the company that supervises the construction of the hospital said they would complete the construction works in time.
“The purpose of this project is to improve the health of the people, especially the ones here in Yumbe. This project is going to see a complete expansion and renovation of Yumbe hospital where by everything which you are going to see here will either be new or newly renovated.”
Aita added that the major challenges that delayed work progress at the beginning of the project included rainy weather and staff strikes over pay but these have since been addressed.
There were also reports on land wrangles by neighboring Omba clan and these as well have been resolved.
