Maracha- A beneficiary under Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) in Maracha district has been arrested for selling off the heifer he received under the program in 2017/2018 financial year.
Mr Alfred Onguti a resident of Boropidri cell in Ayiko Ward Maracha Town Council was arrested after a tip off that he sold the animal to a butcher in Maracha Town Council.
Sergeant Godfrey Avuni the Assistant Coordinator of OWC in Maracha district said: “We got the information. I managed to follow up the animal and recovered it from the abattoir before it was slaughtered.”
According to Mr Joseph Lomongin, the CAO Maracha, the animal will be withdrawn from the beneficiary and he faces courts of law.
“The matter is in the hands of the police. And our position is that the beneficiary who sold this cow will be produced in court.”
Most of the farmers have been advised not to sell off or even use the heifers for marriage, but this trend has continued in most of the areas.
Some of the critics of the program have called for review of the OWC so that intended beneficiaries achieve the targets.
