Arua-The staff of Rural Initiative for Community Empowerment (RICE-WN) have started making re-usable sanitary pads for girls.
President Yoweri Museveni during the 2016 elections had promised to provide sanitary pads to especially primary school girls. But the distribution failed after government declared that there were no funds to buy the pads.
The training for making the pads was facilitated by Gloria Nito from Arua Demonstration Primary School. “Making these pads is very easy, affordable and the materials are available,” One of the staff said.
The Trainer, Gloria Nito, said: “The idea will keep our girls in school, reduce expenditure at home and will encourage the girls to be brave and courageous in public during their menstruation period.”
Pupils in some primary schools in Adumi Sub-county have also been trained on making re-usable pads. The training is taking place around all schools and even parents are encouraged to learn so as to make for their daughter.
Surveys have shown that most girls drop out of school because they become laughing stock especially during menstrual periods. They feel dehumanized and so drop out.
The training also involves sensitizing the boys so as to create a better world for the girl child.
